Your classified ad for cattlemen’               s steakhouse grabbed my attention. I was interested in this ad because I want to help improve your customer’s dining experience. I have worked the concession stand at school before, and I pride myself on being a friendly and helpful person.

I have worked the concession stand at high school volleyball games as a fund raiser for the school golf team. This put me in a similar situation preparing me for the stresses tied to waiting tables. It also showed me what kind of money managing might be necessary for this job. I believe this opportunity will not only put me in a better financial position as I head to college but also the experience will be invaluable. Although being an engineer has little to do with waiting tables there is no substitute for real world work experience.

I am great at managing many different things at the same time which will help me to wait on multiple tables. I believe this is reflected in my school work through which I have earned a 3.87 G.P.A and received a Letter in academics.             I am currently a junior at Roosevelt High School where I will be graduating from in 2012. I have held a position at Van Heusen as well as helping at my parents work. In my extra time I play pool through the V.N.E.A. (Valley National Eightball Association). I have also been a part of the Roosevelt Golf Team and during my junior year I received a letter. I also enjoy riding motorcycles and wood turning. Through the R.M.W.T.(Rocky Mountain Wood Turners) I was awarded a $500 dollar grant to expand my wood shop. I have a 3.88 G.P.A and because of this during this year’s golf season I received the Academic All-State Award.

As I read you’re essay prompt I tried to think of some creative story to express my ideas for my future and how I plan to achieve them. Then I realized, you don’t want a fluffy inspirational story, but a more direct approach would be best. I have always been interested in the mechanics and intricate parts of everything; so because of this, I believe being an engineer is the best career for me, and going to the School of Mines is absolutely the biggest step towards achieving this goal.

I was in sixth grade when I first thought about being an engineer, and when I was telling my mom about it she said the School of Mines is the leading school of engineering.  My mom really did talk to me like that when I was a sixth grader. Since then, I have really focused on my grades and taking classes that will help me in the future. I have taken an agricultural mechanics or an industrial arts class every year that they have been offered, and they have shed light on different parts of an engineer’s job. In these classes, I have learned, not only how to use a multitude of tools, but I have also learned how to draft and manage a mass production situation.

Engineering is a relatively broad field, and this has made it hard for me to decide which specific division to go into. I have put a lot of thought into the matter, and decided on either engineering in alternative fuels or a mechanical engineer. Since my major area will lead me to a job after I graduate, my ideal job would be engineering cars for either Ford or Chevy. I would really enjoy integrating new technology into affordable cars and do so with an American company.

            In order to get into a top engineering career, there are a few steps I have to take to be successful. First and foremost, I have to graduate high school with a strong grade point average. The average G.P.A to be accepted into the School of Mines is a 3.8, with an average A.C.T. (American College Test) score of 28. I must excel in all areas of schooling to earn an acceptable score. After getting into the School of Mines I will need money to pay for my education. The estimated cost for a semester this year was just over 25,000 dollars. I plan to apply for the Moose Lodge scholarship, Elevations Credit Union Scholarship and the B.C.A. (Billiard Congress of America) scholarship, but all of those together will only help me with a small portion of the 25,000 for each semester at Mines. So, it would be obvious to you that having the Alumni Scholarship will only add to the support I need for higher education.

            Achieving my dream of going to the School of Mines and becoming an engineer will be the single most difficult and important thing I have ever done. Although grades and dedication play a huge roll, money is always a determining factor. Without the help of scholarships like the R.H.S. Alumni Association Scholarship, achieving my dream would be impossible.
